How Important Is It to Tell The Truth When Writing?

So, why am I do write my paper about this today? Believe it or not there is a reason. On August 25th 1835, the Sun, the a recently opened New York newspaper,  published a series of articles detailing discoveries made by the eminent astronomer Sir John Herschel.  Over the next few days the articles, taken from the ‘Supplement to the Edinburgh Journal of Science’,  described the discovery of a civilization on the moon, complete with buildings, animals and finally, people. Not people like you and me, people with wings and fur, a bit like bats. There’s a lot of rubbish on …

Usefull Facts About School Report

How did you used to treat your school report? Was it opened with bated breath, with the family gathered round to read the summary of your progress over the past year? Was it hidden at the bottom of your school bag, reluctantly dragged out as you awaited your punishment for the truths written within? Was it passed around family members and friends, who compared scores and grades? Maybe you had teachers who could be relied upon to trot out the same phrases every year. Sometimes you wondered if they even knew who you were, and other times you may have …

Interesting About Nagging in School

Kids love to nag, but some are far more adept at it than others. For some children, they don’t seem to understand when you tell them no. Or they see the rebuttal as a challenge. Others seem to mis-hear “no” or translate the word into “I’ll ask again in three minutes when it’s been forgotten that I asked already”. This is what sorts the pests from any other normal kid. No wonder some parents look worn down and worn out. But this is one of the occasions when I can sincerely say that I blame the parents. Otherwise, how is …

Usefull About Class Pestering

One pest in a class is just about manageable. Doing something different in a lesson increases the amount of pestering that goes on, and the amount of pupils doing it. Take, for example, a trip to the computer suite one lesson, and the pestering that goes on reaches critical level. No matter how clear and slo-o-o-w my initial instructions, no matter how long we spend clarifying points with whole-class questions and answers before the activity, hell, it doesn’t even matter that everything is re-iterated on handouts or on a board that everyone can see, still the pestering comes. “Can I …

What Makes Teaching Wonderful

Part of what makes teaching wonderful is the fact that every day is different. If you are a secondary teacher, every period is different. Things that work well with morning classes may fail with the last period of the day. An activity that is a hit one year may flop completely the next. And sometimes no matter how well you prepare, students will misbehave. As a teacher, the most important trait you can ever have is flexibility. I have seen the most well-intentioned teachers fail because they refused to be flexible. In their lesson plans, in their reactions to things …

Book Review The Glass Castle and One Pink Line

I’ve liked Jeannette Walls ever since I read her memoir, The Glass Castle. Although I’ve talked to many people who have said they’ve thought of her as a mundane writer who told an extraordinary story, I really enjoyed her writing (and The Glass Castle has a 4.5 star rating on Amazon with over 3,500 people having reviewed the book, so others must enjoy her writing too).    The Silver Star is one of those books I find hard to put down. Intensely realistic, with characters you can relate to and sympathize with, I found myself unable to concentrate on much …

Book Review Up the Down Staircase

Up the Down Staircase is a book I happened upon by chance. I bought a Kindle Paperwhite for myself as a Christmas present (some of the best money I’ve spent, ever) and when the device is untouched, ads for books sometimes appear. The ad for this book came up as a Kindle daily deal (I want to say it was $2.99) and after reading the reviews, I knew I had to read it. Bel Kaufman wrote the book as a piece of fiction in 1965, but it was based upon her experiences as a public school teacher in New York …
